It was in the month of Ramadan that the Qur’an was revealed to the heart of The Prophet ﷺ, thus one of the names for the month of Ramadan is the month of the Qur’an. The relationship between this month and The Qur’an is evident through the statement of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar RA “The fast and the Qur’an will both intercede for the servant on the day of Qiyyamah. The fast will plead ‘O Lord, I prevented him from food and desires during the day.’ The Qur’an will plead ‘I prevented him from sleep at night.’” From this we understand that the two go hand in hand.
During the day one is busy with the fast and during the night a person is busy with the Qur’an. We should try our utmost best to recite Qur’an throughout the year, however more so during the month of Ramadan as it will be a means of intercession on the day of judgement. Do not use the time between the taraweeh prayer and the sehri meal on social media scrolling through tiktok as they will be a means for you entering hell; rather busy yourself throughout the night with The Qur’an as it will be a means of intercession on the Day of Judgement.
Even though reciting The Qur’an was a norm for The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he ﷺ would increase the recitation of the Qur’an during this blessed month. The Prophet’s ﷺ companion Sayyiduna Huzefa RA describes the recitation of the Qur’an of The Prophet ﷺ as followed, “One night in Ramadan I had the honour of praying with him ﷺ, He ﷺ recited surah al Baqarah, then surah al Imran and then surah al nisa. When he ﷺ would reach the verse of fearing Allah he ﷺ would supplicate to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ had not even completed two Rakahs when Bilal called the Adhan for Fajr.”
From this we learn that The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would read lots of Quran during the nights of Ramadan and would only busy himself ﷺ with the recitation of The Qur’an. We should try to adopt this sunnah. Of course, it will be difficult at first and it will be testing on our nafs, however every day we must increase the amount we recite and ensure our nights are busied with the Qur’an.
The companion of The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Masood RA, had the honour of listening to the whole Qur’an from the Prophet ﷺ every Ramadan as the Prophet ﷺ would recite to him once every Ramadan. And The Prophet ﷺ read the Qur’an twice to Sayyiduna Abdullah in the year of His ﷺ departure from this temporary world. Subhan Allah, this was only the Qur’an recited to Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Masood RA, never mind the Qur’an recited alone or to other companions. We should also follow the sunnah of finishing the Qur’an during Ramadan and attempt to at least finish a minimum of one Qur’an during the month of Ramadan. This is not as difficult as it seems.
To finish the Qur’an across 30 days a person would have to read 4 pages after every prayer of a 15-line Qur’an. This is not a hard task by any means. May Allah SWT allow us to finish The Qur’an during this blessed month and to build our connection with The Qur’an during this blessed month of Ramadan (Ameen)!
