As Islam spread throughout the world, mosques have been built for the growing number of worshippers and a place of safety and community. In our modern times, they have also become tourist attractions for the avid mosque spotters! As we walk into the mosque courtyards, we feel a sense of peace and contentment. We feel happiness and inspiration that Muslims of the past were able to build such grand and illustrious buildings for the pleasure of Allah SWT.
Our recent Mosques around the World series on social media, showcased both historical and more recent modern mosques. Even until this day grand mosques are being built as iconic beacons of light! Here is a list of mesmerising mosques we captured in this series:
1. Shah Faisal Mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan
“A unique pearl in the lush mountains of Islamabad, completed in 1986, with a cost of $120 Million!”
2. The Great Mosque of Djenné in Djenne, Mali
“Completed in 1907, the Mosque stands tall in its uniqueness like a sand castle in its desert environment!”

5. Jama Masjid in Delhi, India

“Opened in 2006 and was constructed with a cost of about MYR10 million!”

“The mosque is designed in neo-Ottoman architectural style, with glass walls, two minarets and a dome.”

“Completed in 1993, it is the largest functioning mosque in Africa and is the 7th largest in the world.”
9. Nasir al-Mulk Mosque in Shiraz, Iran
“The mosque was built during the Qajar dynasty in 1888. It is also known as the Pink Mosque.”
10. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, UAE
“Completed in 2007, the mosque is large enough to accommodate over 40,100 worshippers!”
11. Sultan Mosque in Singapore
“Completed in 1932, it was named after Sultan Hussain Shah. In 1975, it was designated a national monument.”
12. Al Jabbar Grand Mosque, Indonesia
“Accommodating 33,000 worshippers, the mosque was officially inaugurated on 30 December 2022.”
13. Suleymaniye Mosque, Istanbul – Turkey
“Located on the Third Hill of Istanbul, the mosque was commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent.”
14. Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Muscat – Oman
“The Mosque was opened in 2001 to celebrate 30 years of the then Sultan of Oman, Qaboos bin Said al Said, The Mosque has a capacity for 20,000 worshippers.”
15. Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque, Malaysia
“The mosque has the distinction of having one of the largest religious domes in the world.”
